Why You Should Try NR92’s Heaviest Show

By Thomas McPhee on January 30, 2024

NR92 is well-known to play a wide variety of music – after all, It’s college radio! However, NR92 is also the training station for NAIT’s Radio program. That means the programming is varied, but doesn’t stray too far from the music you’ll hear on country, rock, and top 40 stations. At least, not until after hours.

The after hours shows are under full control of the students of NAIT. There’s no telling what you’ll hear. As I write this, the station offers talk shows, hip-hop, electronic, scores from movies and video games, and NR92’s biggest, baddest, loudest show: Metal Injection.

Every Wednesday at 5, NR92 falls silent for just a moment. From the silence rises the blaring guitars that will fill the next 2 hours of programming. Metal Injection has no mandate and no consistent formula, but I can set some expectations. There is a significant focus on local music. Metal Injection shines a spotlight on Canadian, Albertan, and Especially Edmontonian heavy metal. If you prefer more established bands, some tribute is paid to the giants of metal as well. There is some effort to present a balance of genres, though the overall flavour of a week’s show is hugely influenced by the DJ’s ever-changing tastes. You may be asking, “how can you know so much about how the show is run?” Well, I run it! Nice to meet you!

This guy looks like he knows what he’s doing.

Metal Injection also boasts a feature you won’t find in other heavy metal shows: music that isn’t metal! That doesn’t mean I’m a snob about whether metalcore is “real” metal or not. Starting this January, I’ve added Booster Shots, which are songs outside the usual purvue of my show. I play a smattering of other rock genres, just to spice things up!

So if you wish NR92 offered more than popular rock and the occasional metal staple, I invite you to try Metal Injection. Listen in every wednesday at 5:00.
