Why you NEED to be at Cook County Saloon this Friday

By Brandon Douglas on February 8, 2023

Do you like live music? What about tipping back a few cold ones on a Friday night? Having fun? Or MAYBE, all of the above? If you answered yes to any of these questions then consider yourself fortunate to have come across this blog. Edmonton’s (technically Mulhurst Bay’s) very own Julia Vos is performing at the legendary Cook Country Saloon this Friday night.

Julia puts on a terrific live show. Her band is high energy and Julia herself can play the absolute heck out of the mandolin. She has performed at the U of A’s Bar None, Leduc’s Black Gold Rodeo cabaret, and the Pigeon Lake Music Festival, just to name a few. She ventures out from what you might expect of a young artist still getting a foothold in an ever-increasingly competitive industry. She plays her own songs and she plays covers of artists who have inspired her bluegrass sound, like The Chicks. But she also plays covers from all sorts of genres, putting her own twist on timeless classics whether they were originally recorded by a man or a woman.

You might still be wondering why I have christened this a must attend event. Did I mention it’s FREE??

As students, nearly all of us suffer from the same affliction. Being broke. Opportunities like this do not come around very often. The chance to head out to one of our city’s most storied establishments, see a live concert from a talented young artist and not have it cost you a single dime. This is a once in a blue moon type ordeal.

Even if you’ve never been to Cook County and don’t particularly care for country music or the honkytonk environment, I know you’re chomping at the bit with Reading Week not even a dozen days away. I have grown a little longer in the tooth (I just turned 28, yikes), so I can appreciate the value of getting to bed early. With the show starting at 7:30 there is no danger of it being a late night out if you don’t want it to be. You can be home, tucked in bed with plenty of hours left to get your beauty sleep.

I have taken all your possible objections laid them to rest. Do yourself a favour and cut a little loose this weekend; you deserve it.
