Why I Still Write Letters

By Tamara Pawloske on April 19, 2023

With the rise of digital communication, and phones always on our person, fewer and fewer people are picking up a pen and writing letters. Through writing letters, I find that I have a chance to slow down, and also be creative.

A main reason I love to write letters is that it provides a connection to people in other places. Whether you are writing to a family member or if you’re writing to an otherwise-stranger in another country, it’s a great way to strengthen connections to other people and know what’s going on in someone else’s life, or even in other parts of the world. Some people even write to penpals in other countries as a way to learn or brush up on a foreign language.

As a lover of stationery, I find that writing letters to penpals can be a great way to use up a lot of things that are otherwise collecting dust in my collection. Whether I have somehow acquired stickers that I don’t particularly care for, or whether I’ve added yet another roll of washi tape to my ever-growing collection, these things can be used to add some flair to any letter. They can be stuck to the letter itself (I love to stick washi tape along the sides of a letter and the outside of the envelope) or stuck in the envelope at the last minute (stickers make great “bonus goodies” in a letter!). These things can be a fun little addition to a letter that your penpal can use in their own crafts.

Now, of course, I love pens and fun inks. I take this as a great opportunity to write letters in fun ink colours, whether that be writing a birthday note to someone in their favourite colour, or adding a bit of pizzazz to a letter with a glittery ink, or maybe an ink that changes colour depending on your viewing angle.

There are tons of other fun things that you can include in penpal letters. Photos, drawings, newspaper clippings or small trinkets are all fair game. Some people even send a notebook back and forth, writing their response within it, and decorating the pages like a scrapbook.

There are so many possibilities when it comes to penpals, the people you’ll meet, the friends you’ll make, and the fun you can have.

That is why I still write letters.
