Top 5: Halloween Movies … for Scaredy-cats

By Megan McKee on October 16, 2023

I pride myself on being an avid movie watcher and Halloween’s #1 fan. However, I am easily scared, so horror movies are the one genre I shy away from. Regardless, that doesn’t mean I don’t or can’t have a top 5 must-watch list of superior Halloween movies. I rotate through the following movies every year leading up to Halloween the second a leaf hits the ground.

#5 Practical Magic (1998)

Starting off strong it’s a spooky thriller with magic and Hollywood icons, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock. The two play sisters who also happen to be witches plagued by a curse. This is a must watch with my mom every Halloween but is also great for any time of the year honestly!

#4 Haunted Mansion (2003)

This is my second favourite Eddie Murphy film, after Shrek of course. This was my favourite Halloween movie to play on the Disney channel as a kid. The plot twist was (and still is) everything! It has humour, mystery, romance, and special effects ahead of its time.

#3 Halloweentown High (2004)

This is a controversial take. I never cared much for the first or second film in the Halloweentown series, but this sequel had everything I wanted from the previous two. All the actors were older so the acting wasn’t as questionable, there were new diverse characters, and humbled Marnie’s brother, Dylan. This movie is also Finn Wittrock’s film debut who later went on to star in shows like Ratchet and American Horror Story.

#2 The Brothers Grimm (2005)

Chris Pine. Heath Ledger. Brothers Grimm Tales. You can’t tell me that doesn’t sound phenomenal, because it is! It follows the Grimm brothers in their hunt to find missing girls in a small suspicious town. This film is like Scooby-Doo on steroids where they actually come across a real spirit!

#1 Hocus Pocus (1993)

I mean how could Hocus Pocus not be number one? The Sanderson sisters have come back from the dead to become immortal witches. The only thing standing in the way is two highschoolers, one child, and a black cat who used to be human. The tricks and twists of this movie are classic and make it a must watch every Halloween.

If you have not seen one or any of the movies, I urge you to do so this year! Every single one of these movies will provide a good time and are great for a night with friends. Especially a night with friends who are terrified of scary things, like myself!
