‘The Wild Robot’ A Modern Classic

The newest DreamWorks movie has come out and it is a must watch.

‘The Wild Robot’ follow Roz (Lupita Nyong’o) who is stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean after a storm. On this island she meets a fox named Fink (Pedro Pascal) who tells her that the island is all about survival of the fittest. After a run in with a bear (Mark Hamill) Roz crashes into a gosling nest where one egg is left unharmed. Roz carries the egg until it hatches and Brightbill (Kit Connor) is born. Her new duty is to take care of Brightbill and make sure he can fly by fall. Roz begins to overwrite her programming and learns what it means to be a mother and how to love.

The film is based off a children’s book series called ‘The Wild Robot’ written by Peter Brown who also helped write the script for the movie alongside director Chris Sanders.

As I said before this movie is a must watch for adults and kids alike. The story of finding community and the relationship between mother and son will bring even the most hardened movie goers to tears. I myself got quite choked up at the sweet ending during Roz and Brightbill’s reunion.

But alongside the heartwarming story the animation is beautiful. The color pallet is warm and makes you comfortable and the use of over the top colors does nothing but add the the story and emotions of characters, particularly Roz who can’t produce facial expressions. One moment that stands out is when Brightbill imprints on Roz and she is given her task of taking care of him until fall, multiple rays of light in rainbow colours shoot out of her lighting system. Those larger than life animation moments paired with the movies incredible score can’t help but make you feel excited.

If you and your family are looking for a new movie to go and watch ‘The Wild Robot’ should be at the top of that list. For more movie recommendations and reviews check out my letterboxd.
