The resurgence of Silent Hill and what it means for the franchise

By William Morton on October 13, 2025

The Silent Hill series of games developed and released by Konami have always been a staple in the survival horror gaming scene. Since the series’ debut in the 90’s with the first ever game being released on the PlayStation 1, gamers have continued to return to Silent Hill and its foggy atmosphere for years. The games have spawned spin-off comics, movies and non numbered entries all being met with different critical reception.

The last mainline Silent Hill game was released in 2004 under the name “Silent Hill 4: The Room” and would be the final mainline game to release for quite a long time. After Silent Hill 4, a handful of additional games were released under different titles, but none were able to capture the feeling of the first four games. After taking a break of over a decade, Konami teamed up with Bloober team to develop and remake Silent Hill 2.

Released in 2001, Silent Hill 2 is what most fans consider to be the best game of the series however, at release the game was met to middling critical reception. In 2024, Konami released “Silent Hill 2 Remake” which was a faithful remaking of the original 2001 game. The remake was praised by both fans and critics alike and has gone on to sell over 2 million copies.

Only a year after the Silent Hill 2 remake, Konami released a brand-new silent hill game that took place in 1960’s Japan. “Silent Hill f” was released on September 25th 2025 to high critical praise from fans and critics. The game tackled issues such as gender discrimination and bullying in a school and familial environment in a well thought out way, which has been applauded by everyone who has played the game.

Now that Konami has two extremely successful new entries in the Silent Hill franchise, one would have to ask themselves what they plan on doing with the franchise now that it’s been reinvigorated. In June 2025, it was announced that Konami and Bloober were teaming up again to remake the first ever Silent Hill game for modern hardware, in the same vein of the Silent Hill 2 Remake.

With this announcement, fans have more to look forward to now than ever and are impatiently awaiting for more information about the new remake and the possibilities of new games. Silent Hill is the epitome of psychological survival horror and I strongly recommend taking some time this halloween season to check out the available games.
