The Future of Daft Punk

By Davis Herman on March 24, 2023

The breakup of Daft Punk in 2021 left a lot of fans heartbroken. Still, the question remains, what’ve they been up to since then, and what more do we have to look forward to?

The band left on a high note with their final album, “Random Access Memories,” being their most successful. The record sold over 3,200,000 copies worldwide and remained one of the best love letters to the electronic dance genre and music as a whole. Since then, the robot duo Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo have been working on their own individual projects.

Guy-Man has, for the most part, remained out of the public’s eye. Shortly after their breakup, he announced that he’d be doing a new solo project under the fitting name, “REVISION,” though not much has been heard of him since.

As for Thomas, he’s continued to make music and master his craft. In February, his debut single, “Mythologies: XIII. Le Minotaure,” took the world by surprise, being a far cry from anything he’s done before. What used to be the pulsing electric soundscape has now become a more stripped-down orchestral mix, both haunting and beautiful. Thomas is conjuring the sounds of other modern composers such as Jóhann Jóhannsson and Max Richter.

You can look forward to the complete album, “Mythologies,” which comes out on April 7, 2023. For more information on music history, listen to my show ROCK TALK on NR92 Saturdays from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
