Starting your own Warhammer 40K army, a step-by-step guide

By Mateo Wright on April 30, 2024

Hello to all the people reading this, I’m Mateo, NR92 DJ and resident 40K nerd. I’m here today to show and tell you all how you can go about making your own 40K army in a series of blogs. So, make sure to check in semi-weekly for updates and tips.
Now, before you do any painting, cutting, glueing, and all the other stuff you gotta ask yourself a question, “What army do I want to paint?”. And to that I don’t have an answer for you, you get to choose whatever you want to do. Creativity abound so have fun with it. Once you do find an army that you want to paint, there are still a lot of steps you gotta follow and supplies you’ll need. To start you’ll need:

-Hobby snips
-Plastic Filers
-Toilet paper/Paper towel
-Lots of glue (you can use whatever brand you want as long as it’s permanent stick i.e. gorilla glue, plastic glue)
-Paintbrushes
-Water to wash off paintbrushes
-hobby knife/boxcutter
-Other miscellaneous things (tweezers, masking tape, green stuff, etc.)
-Lastly, paints and primer

Now that you have all of this, your army, and a space to work in you can finally get to it. To start you just have to open the box, take out the plastic sprues, the bases, and other possible accessories. Once it’s all open and out you can cut the pieces out with your hobby sprues but be careful, depending on how you cut them out the bits could fly away and then you have to look around for them.
Once you cut them all out, you’ll have a bunch of pieces to work with, and this tip is where you can make everything easier for yourself by getting as many Ziplock bags as you need to sort the pieces into so it’s easier to pick and choose as you go.

Once you have everything done and cutout this is the fun part, assembly. There are plenty of options when it comes to putting them together and this is where you can add some personality to the miniatures, putting them in different poses can add a bit more depth. Changing the level a weapon is raised to, the type of weapon they have, head direction, the possibilities are endless.

But this is also where the one path splits into two, which we’ll go over in the next blog that I’ll release soon.
