By Duncan Kilburn on April 24, 2023
Spring is upon us, and when you live in Alberta, you seize the opportunity to dress for the short season. Putting effort and planning into your outfits is a great way to get yourself excited for the day and express your creativity. This list will show you the hottest trends this Spring season.
Pastels.
Pastels are a spring staple. Being associated with new life returning to winter landscapes. The softness of pastels also prelude the bolder and harsher colours seen in Summer. The key to wearing pastels is to mix and match them with contrasting colours. Think mint green and brown or lavender and a deep blue. Pastels are associated with youth. To contrast, this, wear pastel pieces that are structured like a jacket.
Baggy Jeans
Denim trends are fast and loose. Since the pandemic and quarantine, jeans have been getting looser and more relaxed, a reaction to being at home for an extended period of time. This season straight and shapeless denim is the trend. It’s an effortless, comfortable, and casual look that is easy to style. A tighter shirt under a baggy jacket with baggy jeans is a perfect everyday outfit.
Worn in Leather
Another reaction to the effects of the pandemic is the rise in used and worn in clothing. More and more people buy used clothing as it’s often cheaper and more environmentally friendly. Spring is still a time for layers (especially in Alberta.), so you can’t go wrong with a classic leather motorcycle jacket. But leather clothing of all forms, from blazers, pants and skirts, is also being seen more and runways. Brown is also the colour for leather in 2023.
Metallics
Bright and shiny to catch the spring sun, metallics are an easy way to add a pop and get attention to your outfit. It doesn’t matter if you go with cooler tones like silver and blue or warm tones like gold, bronze and orange. They are all in. Mixing tones is also encouraged. Dresses are the easiest way to get metallics in your closet, but shirts and shoes are also getting shinier. Metallics aren’t for casual events and are meant to be worn to dress up an outfit.
Mesh and Sheer Fabric
Mesh and sheer fabrics are cool and breathable. They allow for interesting layers as they are see-through. Mesh and sheer also allows for the mixing of textiles. Everything from entirely sheer pieces to ones with small mesh cut-outs has been seen on designer runways and red carpets. The key to wearing mesh and sheer is what you’re wearing under it. Matching solid, tighter-fitting undergarments of the same colour gives a sophisticated look. It also still shows your shape and body while not showing as much skin.
These are some of the trends taking over spring 2023. It’s important to remember that fashion is meant to be a form of expression, and there is no right or wrong way to dress. It’s all about having fun and showing off who you are.
