I had the opportunity to work for 4 years at a local Dairy Queen in my high school years, here are my top 3 of the secret — or not so secret menu items you can order! (things may have changed since Covid for some of these items, but I highly suggest asking!)

3 – TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SECRET MENU – or what could a secret menu item!

Some locations depending on where they are, i.e. smaller locations, will have stock of the seasonal blizzards you love for MONTHS after the blizzard is off the menu. So while you can, shop smaller and more local stores. If you’re visiting a smaller town, support their DQ as they are often local franchise owners and their stores have more customizability, more product for secret menu items and have personable staff. At the location I worked at, the overall feeling of the whole job was a lot healthier than one of a multi-franchise owner. So, overall, it’s best to support a local franchise!

Some of the secret menu items are blizzards that were around for a season, but you may not realize that these blizzards actually still exist as long as the franchise still has the ingredients to make them! So don’t be afraid to ask or just tell them what goes into that blizzard. One of my favourites is a Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Blizzard, it has cookie dough pieces, chocolate chunks and peanut butter sauce, so if the store has it, they can make it!

2 – You can always ask for things FRESH.

You can always, always, always as for every single menu item fresh — specifically grill items. Chicken, burger meat or even fries, they can always make it fresh for you! It will have a wait time-but the wait time is so worth it. The fresh meat is often times better because on slow days, the meats and chickens could be sitting for an hour or two, or even more. Since Covid, some locations are better at making things fresher which is why you might find that your food is taking longer than it did pre-Covid!

1 – As long as they have the product, you can add it/substitute it in anything!

Have you ever wanted to have maybe strawberry sauce in your blizzard instead of chocolate? You can! Simply ask for it to be substituted. Some places though might upcharge you for it, so find a place that can do it for you for free because they can and should do it for free. My boyfriend and I have created many great concoctions by doing this and have used this to make our ice-cream visits phenomenal. One I will share is what we’ve deemed as a Black Forrest Cupfection – a variation for a DQ Cupfection.

So when you order a regular Brownie-Oreo Cupfection, instead of the marshmallow and chocolate sauce you would normally get in it, get it with strawberry and cherry sauce (or if it’s in season, raspberry sauce) keep everything else the same, but just change this one little thing and you’ll be laughing!
