Revisiting a note to myself…

By Lexi McFarlane on December 15, 2023

Yesterday, all of us third-semester DJ’s here at NR92 received a special blast from the past.
15 months ago, we wrote what was called “A note to myself”, which contained five different prompts for us to respond to in writing, for what we saw possible from ourselves.
I’d like to share mine, and honestly, I encourage you to consider your own responses to these prompts; they can really offer the greatest sense of direction for your future.
“I was motivated to get into broadcast media because…”
Original response: I have always had such a great passion for sports, and more especially the calls that narrate each and every exciting moment!
This response may never change, though a key addition has been added in my time here at NR92: I have the same passion for talking all things Edmonton. This city, this beautiful metropolis (I will forever say it is such) is my heart and soul, asides from sports broadcasting, and I could talk about it until I’m orange and blue in the face. Let’s Go Oilers, by the way.
“In three years, I see myself doing…”
Original response: Covering sports for a major network in either Canada or the U.S., or being established as a play-by-play voice otherwise.
I was overly ambitious back then, and I think I was just dreaming of being able to cover any event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. I’m on the right track for the latter, at least. Gotta start small sometimes and work your way up; there’s no way to just leap up to the top of the Stantec Tower in one instant.
“I think I’ll like my new career because…”
Original response: So far, I’ve neer been to a sports event that has failed to excite me- every event I’ve been to has energized me!
Still true to this day. But more simply… let’s just say I’m getting long in the tooth at my current night job, and leave it at that.
“Three things I would like to do before completing this program…”
Original response: Gain more broadcasting experience, work around Ooks hockey at some point, meet new friends.
Took care of two birds with one hockey puck; being a voice for the NAIT Ooks broadcasts has been a thrill, and everything I imagined it would be. It’s an amazing experience to be a part of. And yes, I have met new friends. The other NR92 DJ’s all count, each and every one of them. Plus the TV students too, can’t forget about them.

“Oh, and here’s a great quote, or something I thought about recently…”
Original response: “This is the only job I ever wanted, and this is the only place I ever wanted to be!” -Rick Jeanneret
This hits so differently, since he passed away over the summer. Hope you’re resting well in hockey paradise, RJ.
