Remember to actually read something over reading week

By Nick Petlock on February 1, 2021

Reading week is a time for students to take a break from their studies. Though I’ve learnt from past years experience that reading is the last thing on my to-do list over my week off. Last year I was off to Mexico where I enjoyed a few cervezas and the beach. But this year – with everyone locked down – you might actually have the time to make it through a good book.

But where do you get books and what should you read? If you don’t already have something in mind, we at NR92 have got you covered. This week on The Feed, we are talking about supporting local businesses and initiatives. The show will air for the next two Fridays at noon and they are replayed on Sundays at 7 p.m. Also, catch past episodes on our Soundcloud. For this episode, I spoke with Jason Purcell who is a Co-Owner of the Glass Bookshop.

Glass Bookshop started out as a pop-up book shop around Edmonton and eventually set up shop in City Centre Mall. Then, just before the pandemic shut everything down last March, their lease was up. So now they are operating as an online book vendor until they have access to their new brick and mortar location on 97 street NW near the courthouse. Glass bookshop focuses on highlighting authors who are local, BIPOC and LGBTQ2S+. But you can get anything you want through their online store. If they don’t have it, they’ll order it in.

Once I discovered Glass Bookshop I knew right away that was going to be my source for all my families Christmas gifts this past December. Its hard for me to get around because I don’t have a vehicle. Thankfully, they offer free delivery right to your door! While I was shopping for my family I also did some shopping for myself. It’s always tough to get reading done during a school semester for me. But I’m obviously not going anywhere this year for reading week; so I might as well get one of these books into my brain. I managed to read two books over the Christmas break: Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer and Empire of Wild by Cherie Dimaline. Both were fantastic and offered great perspective on Canadian Indigenous culture. So, if you don’t know what to read, why not check one of those out.
