Playoff Madness

There’s nothing that beats the atmosphere around Edmonton when it comes to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The city starts to shed its evidence of winter, the passion emerges from hibernation and the fans take the energy to levels that most hockey cities would dare dream of experiencing. That’s what happens inside Rogers Place when the Stanley Cup Playoffs come around, but what about outside? COVID-19 put a damper on the hockey spirit around the city for three long years, but last season was the start of something special. The Oilers Entertainment Group presented the concept of The Moss Pit as a tribute to long time Oilers icon, Joey Moss who had passed away in 2020.

This concept was a smash hit with the fans young and old because let’s be real here, the price of a playoff ticket to get inside Rogers Place is not for the faint of heart, but it allows the ones who love a playoff atmosphere to experience it for free. I first experienced it with last seasons Battle of Alberta and let me tell you, this was purely electric! Thousands of hockey fans jammed into the Ice District Plaza to watch some live music, take in the game and of course they enjoy Edmonton summer weather.

Fast forward to last night’s Game One between the Oilers and Kings. The torrential downpour that hammered the city through most of the afternoon would have deterred most fans, but Edmonton is a different animal in the postseason. Sure, the results weren’t what the fans were hoping for… But, with an even bigger crowd on hand for Wednesday’s game, the atmosphere was palpable, with fans young and old sensing a Game 2 win. Klim Kostin played hero on Wednesday evening, sending fans outside onto 104 Ave in high spirits and could be heard chanting “Let’s Go Oilers” throughout various interviews being conducted postgame interviews.
Words don’t do any justice to just how insane the atmosphere is outdoors for a playoff game; all you can do is check it out in person and lose your voice like I have each time
