My Favourite 2024 Albums
By Elizabeth Lindberg on October 11, 2024
I have been saying over the course of the year that 2024 could go down in history as one of the best music years this half of the century. With incredible albums, a well-defined soundtrack of the year, the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef, not to mention pop juggernaut Taylor Swift releasing her EP The Tortured Poets Department, 2024 is already an amazing year for music. So to celebrate these outstanding 366 days, I’m going to go over some of my favourite albums that have come out this year.
Brat – Chali XCX
Brat was an instant classic the moment that it released. From radio classics to club bangers, this album quite honestly has it all. It is one of the few albums that has graced Anthony Fantano (theneedledrop)‘s 10/10 list. It takes a pretty dang good album for an album to be declared the album of the summer, with this year being declared “Brat Summer” by a majority of the internet. Although Charli XCX has declared that “Brat Summer” is officially over, the hype is far from dying with an upcoming deluxe album.
Hyperdrama – Justice
Hyperdrama is without a doubt one of my favourites so far this year. In my opinion, It’s the best album that Justice has put out since their debut Cross in 2007. The electronic duo collaborated with a list of other artists, the tracklist featuring stars such as Tame Impala, Thundercat, and Miguel. I can’t recommend this album enough if you’re interested in getting into electronic music, as it contains something that everyone could get into.
Honey – Caribou
Indietronic artist Dan Snaith is back at it again with his eleventh album, and sixth under the Caribou moniker. This house-adjacent album is one of my favourites this year, with a laundry list of incredible songs that make you want to lose it on the dance floor. The album doesn’t lose its value either, with each song feeling unique to the last, which isn’t always the case with full length house albums. Although I haven’t done a deep dive into Caribou or Dan Snaith’s other projects, this album has most certainly given me the motivation to do so. If the rest of his music sounds like this, he could be launched up into my podium of Canadian artists, alongside The Weeknd and deadmau5.
ten days – Fred again..
British DJ Fred again.. is back with a bang, with his fourth studio album ten days. He has certainly already made a significant mark on the electronic music scene with his Actual Life series, which contains his 3 albums before this. ten days is a classic house album, which I think will age quite well. Plus, it features a list of countless well known features and co-producers, like Skrillex, Four Tet, Anderson .Paak and Joy Anonymous. Out of all of the albums that have come out this year so far, ten days would probably be my favourite so far.
Of course, this is not an expansive list. There are some albums that I’ve listened to that I’m still yet to fully develop feelings on, such as French-pop group L’Imperatrice’s Pulsar and Lil Tecca’s Plan A, as well as unreleased but announced albums such as A$AP Rocky‘s Don’t Be Dumb, The Weeknd‘s Hurry Up Tomorrow, and Playboi Carti‘s long awaited project I Am Music. But without a doubt, this year has already been phenomenal for new music and new stars, and boy, am I here for it.
