In memoriam of reading week vacations

By Nick Petlock on February 12, 2021

This time last year I was gearing up to take off to Sayulita, Mexico. This year I’m gearing up to spend a week alone in my apartment. R.I.P. warm weather vacation. Just because I won’t be in a tropical climate doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy myself though. I want to share with you some ways of getting through this reading week in style.

I’m so happy I got the chance to get out of the cold weather this time last year because if I hadn’t gone for it. It would’ve been way too long since my last vacation. If you’re anything like me, you start to go a little crazy if you can’t get out of our city at least once a year. February is always the best time to travel too, because usually you get to skip one of the worst, most freezing weeks of the year.

This year we are all being put in a position of making the best of what we’ve got. Life gave us lemons, now it’s up to us how we use them. I plan on having the best “stay-cation” I possibly can. I’ve got a list as long as my arm of the things I should be doing to get a bit ahead of the game with school, but schoolwork is not what I want to be doing. I’m throwing that list in the trash and I’m starting a new one. If we can’t be sipping on cervesas on the beach, you better believe I’ll be finding ways to live the high life from home. These are the keys to getting through reading week in style:

Self-care:
Go out to Lush and Color De Vino if you’re comfortable shopping and get yourself some bubble bars, bath bombs and wine. Take a nice bath in the dark with your favourite podcast and a glass of the best wine you can afford!

Fulfillment:
Probably the most important of all the categories. People need accomplishment, even during a time of rest and relaxation. So, you can do whatever is in your wheelhouse. Me, I have a stack of books from Glass Bookshop I got for Christmas. I hardly read during the semester because I’m too busy with schoolwork. So I’m going to try to finish two books during reading week.

Entertainment:
Every Tuesday find your way to VISSIA’s Instagram page where she does a live session called “Making Out With VISSIA”. VISSIA is a local musician whose been a featured New Music Nooner artist on NR92. She is always joined by another artist and they talk about what they’ve got on the horizon in work and life. I try to make it every week and I always have a good time. It’s honestly just so nice to be able to see live music, regardless of the way you’re watching it.

At the end of the day, if I can make it through the week without being a complete couch potato, I’ll be happy. What are you planning for your stay-cation? Comment below if you have any tips or tricks of your own for getting through reading week.
