Edmonton the Winter Wonderland

By Nick Petlock on February 21, 2021

Sure, winter is cold and dark, but Edmonton is a winter wonderland with a variety of outdoor activities to keep you busy and active. Even during the pandemic there’s still plenty of opportunities for everyone to enjoy.

If you’re into skating, get out and enjoy one of the city’s outdoor skating rinks. Hawrelak Park, Victoria Park and the skating rink at City Hall are popular but the city has so many more. Head over to the city’s website at Edmonton.ca for skating times and get out and get active with some skating at one of the city outdoor skating rinks this winter.

Snow Valley and the Edmonton Ski Club are popular destinations for skiing and snowboarding. They both offer night skiing throughout the week so check out their schedules for more info. Edmonton Ski Club also offers tubing and the Alpine Club of Canada’s ice wall for ice climbing.

Snowshoeing is a fun way to get some exercise and Edmonton is a great place to do it. Some of the more popular spots in the city are Fort Edmonton and John Janzen Nature Centre. If you’re looking to get out of the city then Elk Island National Park or Strathcona Recreation Area are just a short drive east of Edmonton.

If you’re not into any of the activities why not have a look at some of the winter festivals around. Winter brings legendary events like Silver Skate where you can experience a snow-sculpture garden, winter sports and more. The Flying Canoe Volant is an interactive cultural experience with music and a dance party in the middle of the forest. And Ice on Whyte showcases some of the best ice artists in the world in a competition of creativity and skill alongside an incredible festival that’s fun for the whole family.
