Deep Dive into being a DJ
By Justus Robinson on October 23, 2024
NR92 is the greatest place to be on campus. And although there are trials, tribulations, and one in particularly very tricky teacher, all of the DJ’s here love and take great pride into what they do. When I first got accepted into this program, I thought I would learn how to be on air and that’s it. I wanted to learn all the techniques. The breathing, the talking, not stuttering so much, not saying “like” so much, but there is so much more that goes into being a DJ that meets the eye.

Throughout the three semesters here on campus you learn in an advanced way how to become a journalist/storyteller. Every couple weeks we’re sent off into the wilderness, asking people for interviews and getting rejected left, right and centre. And it is humbling. We record, edit, produce, and write stories around these interviews so we can play clips of them on air. We are constantly researching, making sure we know what’s going on in the community. Shoutout yegwave they are always helping me out.
2. Audio editing/production
Oh my goodness my worst enemy. I should’ve known going into this program that audio editing at this level (or even at all) would be a large part of what we do here, man I never would’ve guessed it was at this level. Am I good at it? Not really no. Is that to the fault of our instructor? Also no that man is so patient with me. Dave I don’t know what I’d do without you. I have him go over and re-explain things like you wouldn’t believe. There is so much time and effort and knowledge that goes into making audio projects but I will say because of all that time and effort, the outcome is more rewarding than any class. And I’m passing, that’s all that matters.
3. Social Media
In third semester you get one week where you are something called the “Content Manager” (I know so official right?) During that week, you are in charge of all of NR92’s social media accounts. Making posts at least once a day on at least three different platforms. You also have to record, edit, and produce a YouTube video (go watch mine!) and a New Music Nooner. I was Content Manager last week and tell me why it was the hardest week of my whole life??? I had so much to get done I have so much more respect for people that do it full time now cause that stuff is hard.
Overall, being on air, shooting the s*** with your friends is an absolute blast and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I just wish I knew more about what I was signing up for going in!
