Ballin’ on a budget this winter break

By Tristyn Battle on December 17, 2025

Winter break comes with a lot of time off to relax and reset, but sometimes boredom can creep in. When that boredom does sneak up on you, here are some fun activities you can try alone or with friends that aren’t going to break the bank.

1. Hit the Slopes (or the Sledding Hill)

Starting off with the most pricey option on this list. You don’t need to be a pro snowboarder to enjoy the thrill of winter sports. Grab a group of friends and head to Rabbit Hill Snow Resort or even take the drive to the mountains to hit one of the mountain runs. It’s fun and a great way to embrace the cold instead of hiding from it. Bonus points if you bring hot cocoa in a thermos.

2. Host a Winter Movie Marathon

Binge watching your favourite Christmas movies as snow drifts down outside your window is nothing new. But think beyond just Christmas classics—mix in some nostalgic winter-themed flicks, rom-coms, or even horror if you’re feeling spicy. Create a cozy vibe with blankets, fairy lights, and snacks. Invite your friends, family, classmates or even co-workers. You survived the semester, you deserve to just take it easy and relax.

3. Explore Local Winter Festivals or Markets

Most cities and towns have pop-up holiday markets or light festivals. They’re perfect for grabbing unique gifts, trying seasonal treats, and snapping aesthetic pics for your feed. RAD Torque Raceway hosts their yearly Magic of Lights; a 2.5k drive through over 2 million Christmas lights. Candy Cane Lane is another go to for Edmontonians, where every house of the street goes all out decorating their houses with lights and decorations.

4. Ice Skating Adventures

Outdoor rinks are a winter staple. Whether you’re gliding gracefully or clinging to the edge for dear life, it’s a fun way to get moving and laugh at yourself. Edmonton has a variety of outdoor rinks, including one just outside Rogers Place downtown in the Ice District. If you want a less traditional skating experience, try the Rundle IceWay or Victoria Park Ice Surfaces. These offer a skating path through scenic parks, allowing you to go at your own pace and enjoy the journey.
