5 fun activities to do over Reading Week

By Kate Gullekson on February 18, 2024

Reading break is here! You may have plans throughout the week or maybe you don’t have any plans and want to chill at home. Sometimes plans can get cancelled or you get bored at home so if that happens to you here are 5 things to do over reading break.

  1. Travel

Whether it’s a quick trip to the mountains or spending the week in a tropical place, take some time away from home. With the mountains being only 5 hours away its a great place to participate in winter activities like skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating and many other snowy activities. Or check out the Banff hot springs, and the Banff gondola to see some beautiful views of the mountains. Maybe you have plans to go to a tropical place. I know I do! Swim in the ocean or the pool, go snorkeling, eat delicious food. Or if the water isn’t your thing then stay on land and build a sand castle, play some beach volleyball, or sun tan. Make sure to wear sunscreen because burns are not fun.

  1. Read Something

I mean it’s called reading week. I know it’s cool to say you don’t read but trust me reading is fun. Get a book that has things you’re interested in. Stop by the library or a book store and find a book that catches your eye.

  1. Cook or Bake

When you’re hungry, make something. Get out of the house, get all the ingredients you need and make something delicious. I know tha cooking can be a long process and sometimes you would rather just grab a burger. But cooking or baking gives you something to do and eating whatever you make is the best part.

  1. Play games

Why not go old school and play some old fashioned board games or Cards. Uno is one of my personal favourite card games and it is great to play with a big group of people. Make the game more competitive with prizes! And if you’re not in the mood for those then, play video games. Video games are how I spent Reading break last year and it was really fun! Whether you play games on your phone, computer or gaming console it’s a fun way to pass the time. Add some prizes to make it more competitive and more fun.

  1. Go shopping

Bring your friends, and go to the mall to do some shopping. Get some new clothes before coming back to school or don’t have to buy anything. Walking around the mall with your friends is just as fun! Stop at the food court and grab a bite to eat. If you’re at West Edmonton Mall go to the movie theatre and watch a movie, play mini golf, go to the waterpark or Galaxyland. There is so much you can do and that’s at one mall.
