3 ways to discover new music
By Bronson Kashino on February 6, 2025
Every local band playing a $10 gig for a few dozen people could be the next group walking on stage to collect a Best New Artist Grammy. Take Chappel Roan β this was her back in 2021 playing for less than 100 people in a park.
The real question is how do you find new local artists? You don’t have the time to go to every open mic night in town. And frankly, there’s no reason to put yourself through that kind of torture.
There’s lots of ways to find new music, but I’ll get you started with my top three.
1. Go to shows
It sounds obvious, but sometimes the answer really is that simple. Get out on the weekend and check out some shows at places like Starlite Room or the Buckingham.
2. Buy local music
Check out an independent music store in your community like Blackbyrd Myoozik and ask if they have a local section. Chances are the person working there is in a band too. I don’t mean to profile, but come on.
3. Listen to NR92’s New Music Nooner
You didn’t think I’d get through a whole blog without saying NR92 did you? Every weekday at 12:20 NR92 plays an interview with a local artist and some of their music. The best part is you can discover new music wherever you are as long as you’re listening to NR92.
