3 Tips to Succeed in RATV

By Nic Fata on August 31, 2023

I like to think I have come a long way and learned a lot since my first semester in the RATV program. At the end of my third semester, I’m confident in my abilities to edit sound and music, I know how to operate the radio station and what to talk about when I’m on air.

For anyone considering getting into the RATV program or just starting the program this semester, here are my top 3 tips to succeed and get the most out of this amazing program

#3 Use the resources proved to you! Most instructors are going to have a “Resources” tab on their Moodle. This is where you can find PowerPoints that instructors have gone over as well as other resources that can aid in your learning. For example, Dave Albright has a lot of third-party resources for more advanced uses of some audio tools as well as his own tutorial videos (that are super helpful when you’re working on assignments at 2 in the morning)

#2 Participate in campus events! Pay attention to the events NAITSA hosts, they are great places to go and meet students outside of the RATV program. Ask about the program they’re in, learn what interests them as a person, ask what brought them to NAIT, and listen to their answers! The more you know about your target demographic the better you can prep relatable material for your on-air shows.

#1 DO THE ASSIGNMENTS!! The best way you are going to learn at a place like NAIT is by doing the assignments to the best of your ability. Ask questions about topics you are not sure about and work through problems you’re having. Don’t let deadlines sneak up on you, you are given a lot of time to work on certain things because they are going to take a lot of time to do properly. If you do the work you will reap the benefits, I promise!

And finally, one last bonus tip ENJOY YOUR TIME HERE! Go get lunch at The Nest, catch a hockey, soccer, or volleyball game, hang out in the common areas on campus, and talk to other students about anything and everything.
