2021: The Year for Great Games

By Nick Petlock on February 5, 2021

2021 is set to be the year of many big things. Hopefully one of those things is the cure for COVID-19, but at this point who can say. I can say that one thing I am really looking forward to this year is the plethora of new games coming out. Everything from remasters to completely ground up built games are scheduled to release this year at varying points. So for now I’ll be focusing on one of the biggest games coming out this year for me: The Mass Effect Legendary edition.

Mass Effect is a sci-fi role playing game or RPG for those of you inexperienced in the terms of gamers. It follows the adventures of your character (who you get to completely customize) Commander Shepard. The game focuses on the journey of your hero as he tries to save the galaxy from total extinction from a race of super-sentient machines, hellbent on the destruction of all organic life.

Now enough about the nerd-talk. The reason I am so excited for this game, or rather games, is that I grew up playing the games throughout my childhood. Most of my early experience with the games was watching my sister or my dad play them, but as I got old enough to enjoy them (around 12-13) I discovered just how amazing the game actually was. And now that it’s being remastered and re-released, as The Legendary Edition.

For those of you who aren’t big gamers, I’ll equate it to this: your favourite childhood movie, remastered and brought to life with incredible next generation technology. Now imagine they made sequels to your favourite film that were just as good if not better than the original. Now imagine they remaster all the movies you love so they look super new and polished, and then release them all together for a little over 100 dollars. That’s the feeling I have right now. And if you are feeling something other than pure excitement like your parents telling you you’re going to Disneyland on Christmas morning, you did it wrong and you need to re-read this paragraph.

For some, 100 dollars seems like a lot of money to put down for just one game. But let me first remind you that this is not one, but three games rolled up into one. Furthermore, each Mass Effect title being released has won game of the year for their respective release years.

I’m going to close with this: if you have never ever played an RPG game, let alone never played Mass Effect, I would strongly encourage you to consider trying them. This might sound tacky or cliché but it’s true when I say they provide a manner of escape from real life. Instead of focusing on you and all your problems that are stressing you out, focus on your character and how awesome and epic they are.

I might be a 20 year old NAIT student, but when I play games I can be whoever I want, whenever I want. If you’d like to take a look at RPG’s and see how they work and how fun they can be, I would strongly encourage you to check out Mass Effect by Bioware and EA. Additionally, you can hear me talk all about games and other nerdy stuff on NR92’s Third’s Live every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Don’t forget to share and comment on what games you are most excited for this year! And look for #NR92Games on social media to keep up to date on future discussions!
