Thousands of support staff return to Edmonton schools

By Sierra McCool on March 20, 2025

The union representing thousands of educational support staff has reached a tentative deal with nine Alberta school boards.

After two months of strike action across the province, students and staff will be welcoming support staff back into the school buildings. On Sunday, a deal was reached between the union and Edmonton Public schools. The deal includes pay raises for staff through to August 2028.

Many districts are being condemned for their use of scab workers at the height of the strike. Edmonton support worker, Kim McCool says a healing process is needed between the school board and its employees.

“Going back to work I think people have mixed feelings around how they were treated by the district in that regard,” McCool says, “for allowing replacement workers to come into the building.”

Edmonton public school support staff are expected to return to work this week.
