Surviving tax season at NAIT
By Daveney Araujo on March 3, 2026
In the fast-paced lives of students who are juggling classes, work and other responsibilities, taxes are typically an afterthought. Chartered accountant Jaime Araujo says that it’s still important for students to file an income tax return each year before the deadline, regardless of overall income. For NAIT students, it’s important to remember that tuition fees are eligible tax credits that can carry into future tax years.
“There are several tax credits, but I’ll highlight a few of them here. For example, tuition fees that are paid to post-secondary institutions, like NAIT, can be claimed as a tax credit in the current year, or carried forward to another year to claim when the income is higher.”
Filing also ensures that students receive payments for GST credit, and deductions for interest paid on student loans. It’s crucial for students to stay organized when gathering T-slips from part-time jobs, post-secondary institutions and medical expenses, if any. The deadline to file an income tax return is April 30th, 2026.
