Safety on transit improving

The City of Edmonton is working to implement system-wide changes to address safety and cleanliness on the LRT and buses in the city. According to new figures from the Edmonton Police Service, these changes are working. Incidents on transit like assaults, robberies, and theft have dropped by over 35 percent from spring to summer.

On NAIT campus, some students feel that the changes are increasing their sense of safety when taking transit.

“Because of the increased patrols, I think maybe it might start improving now,” says Alyssa Conti, a second-year student. Another student says, “I’d say I feel relatively safe, mind you I haven’t experienced a lot of the things people talk about.” With the decrease, some students are hearing less about incidents on transit. Jannah Jumamil says, “Last time I heard about an incident was last year.”

Even with the decrease in offenses, drug-related incidents are still up from the 300 reported this time last year.
