Observing the solar eclipse

By Maxwell Read on February 29, 2024

A heavenly event is coming up, so mark your calendar April 8th for the solar eclipse.

A total solar eclipse will be visible from parts of Eastern Canada, the US and Mexico. For us here in Edmonton it unfortunately will only appear as a partial solar eclipse, with a 34% eclipse magnitude, meaning only that much of the sun will be blocked by the moon.

The Telus World of Science’s Director of the Planetarium and Space Sciences Frank Florian says for Albertans to see a total solar eclipse, there is a bit of a wait.

“For here in Alberta, if Albertans don’t want to go anywhere and want to see a total solar eclipse, well we gotta wait until August 22, 2044.”

To view the partial solar eclipse here in Edmonton on April 8th you can use a pair of number 14 welders’ goggles or pick up a pair of eclipse viewing glasses from the Telus World of Science’s Gift shop.
