A student’s perspective on the teacher’s strike
By Daveney Araujo on March 24, 2026
Alberta students are sharing their perspectives on the teacher’s strike in hopes of creating change. On March 13th, the Alberta Teachers’ Association failed to obtain a court suspension over the government’s use of the notwithstanding clause. Grade 12 student James Araujo says that the government is not taking teachers seriously.
I think the government is to blame because they had many opportunities to give the teachers what they wanted, and every option was at their disposal.
On top of this, a grassroots petition has been launched by students to cancel diploma exams scheduled for June. Diploma exams are administered by the Alberta government. Students have posted several messages on the petition that explain why writing the exams puts them at a disadvantage. Many students argue that they did not get the necessary writing experience due to the cancellation of January diploma exams. As of today, the petition has received over ten thousand signatures.
The petition, along with further information, can be found here.
